At night, when the moon hung high in the sky, the people of the tribe would hear howling all through the night hours. Few even dared to go near the island, and those that did rarely came back. Those that did come back were never the same. They would become ill, vicious in behavior, and would eventually turn into the beasts that the Penobscot knew inhabited the island. The tribe was ravaged by attacks and the number of healthy, completely human people was decreasing quickly. Not long after, the white folk came along and only helped to quicken the demise of the tribe. The strange attacks continue to this day, though the legend of the wolves of Lupus Isle has fallen somewhere between fact and fiction. Over the many years since the tribe diminished, there have been multiple disappearances and attacks in the area of Chesterfield. The island has been classified as a Danger Area and the police do their best to keep the activity there down with nightly sweeps of the island. A lighthouse was erected on the isle decades ago and it still runs, with it's frequently changing lighthouse keeper always having a watchful eye for trespassers. |
